The onboarding process for new hires can be a pivotal period in their professional journey. It's a time when they adapt to the culture, learn new skills, and gear up for their roles. To shed light on this transition, we recently asked professionals from the maritime industry about their experiences with onboarding.

Here are the fascinating insights we've gathered from their responses:

1. “Give It Time”: One common theme that emerged from the interviews is the importance of allowing at least two months for a smooth transition. In the first month, individuals focus on building relationships and getting to know their team. By the second month, the actual work begins, along with the inevitable learning curve.

2. Quick Transitions for Some: For those transitioning from roles in the shipping industry to performance management or voyage optimization, the process can be remarkably fast. It typically takes about 2 to 3 months to hit the ground running. Younger professionals, in particular, prove to be quick learners.

3. The 6-Month Milestone: For many, the 6-month mark is a turning point. This is the point where they gain the independence to handle their responsibilities confidently. The journey can be filled with challenges, but it leads to a significant level of self-sufficiency.

4. The Role of Training: While some professionals highlighted the importance of training, others lamented its absence. A common recommendation was for organizations to invest in training programs, with a focus on sustainability and digitalization. Such courses can significantly enhance the onboarding process.

5. Initial hiccups: Few of the initial challenges that mariners face are the significant difference in wages, transitioning from a hierarchical set up on board to a relatively flat organization on shore, constant self-doubt on whether they should go back, a huge disconnect with the end goal as seafarers are more used to following operational procedures rather than reflecting on what needs to be done for business continuity.

6. The Art of Adaptation: On the other hand, some interviewees emphasized that adaptation can be swift. For instance, handling a deluge of emails on Outlook might seem overwhelming at first, but most individuals settle into the groove within a couple of weeks.

7. Mariner Transitions: The transition from a mariner's role can be unique. It's essential for these individuals to understand that the role is not just about clicking buttons and going through reports. They should be prepared for a grind. However, a maximum of 6 months is typically sufficient to adapt.

Conclusion:

The onboarding journey is a critical phase for new hires, and its duration varies significantly across industries and roles. By sharing these insights, we hope to provide a glimpse into the diverse experiences professionals encounter as they embark on new career paths. Understanding the onboarding process better can help organizations tailor their approaches to better support their employees during this crucial period.

I encourage you to share your thoughts and experiences related to onboarding in the comments. Let's continue the conversation and learn from each other's journeys.
