Introduction:

       The Chief Officer, or Chief Mate, is the senior officer right below the Captain/Master on a Merchant vessel. They are responsible for directing the deck department, which comprises Second & Third Mates, able-seafarers, and deckhands, ensuring efficient management of the deck crew. The Chief Mate is accountable for various tasks but are not restricted to:

  • Navigational duties
  • Cargo operations
  • Implementing safety and security protocols
  • Watchkeeping
  • Emergency response
  • Communicating with the ship's Master, other officers

 

For those aspiring to achieve the position of chief officer in the merchant navy and obtain the UK STCW COC, this blog offers in-depth information about the eligibility steps, which encompass 12 months of sea service as a deck officer and the successful completion of the Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training (NAEST(O) and NAEST(M)) courses, along with other requirements.

 

Chief Mate's COC course:

The course is designed for students to progress from OOW level (deck) to Chief Mate level.  The Route will enable the candidates to achieve Chief Mate Certification by the SQA examination. The Advanced Diploma and Chief Mate Certificate of Competency qualifications will enable you to work at sea as Chief Officer.

Eligibility:

  • Application Form
  • Passport – 1st page and address page
  • must have completed 12 months watchkeeping service as a Deck Officer while holding an OOW unlimited II/1 Certificate of Competency (CoC)
  • Must have completed the NAEST(O) course MCA approved IMO Model 1.27 ECDIS course before undertaking the NAEST(M) course
  • All relevant pages of 2nd Mates CoC along with the CoC expiry date page
  •  Notice of Eligibility (NOE) by MCA
  • Personal medical fitness certificate recognized by the MCA

 

Courses and Certification:

In addition to the above, candidates must be in possession of the following short Course & certificates before the Certificate of Competency (COC) can be issued by the MCA. The MCA, UK approved STCW advanced courses (AFF+MFA+PSC & RB) are now being done in Mumbai.

The courses include:

  • Master’s Medicare
  • Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)
  • Medical First Aid (MFA)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Craft (PSC & RB)

Details of the course:

Duration: 3 month (Online) and 6 months (Offline in UK Campus)

Fees: 8005 GBP (It is approx. and may vary)

Start Date: The program runs on a tri-annual basis, with batches starting in January, July & October each year.

Conclusion:

 Once the candidate satisfies all the pre-stated conditions, they will become eligible for the Chief Mate (Unlimited) UK Certificate of Competency (COC).
