Alba has a long history of graduate studies in Shipping. Being the first school to offer a specialized MBA in Shipping, we offer today 2 graduate programs in Shipping, The MBA in Shipping and The MSc in Shipping Management, both tailored to meet the educational needs of the global shipping industry.
Greek ship owners control more than 16% of the world merchant fleet and hold a leading position in the global maritime shipping market. Moreover, more than 700 Greek and foreign shipping companies are situated in Piraeus and the surrounding areas offering many networking and working opportunities.
Thanks to the careful design of the programs, Alba’s high academic standards, and the strong links Alba maintain with renowned companies in the shipping industry, many of Alba students find a job even before their graduation. On average more than 90% of our graduates find jobs in the first 6 months after graduation.
The two programs, designed in collaboration with the Greek shipping community (the Business Advisory Committee for the Shipping programs of Alba), provide significant networking opportunities along with a challenging and unique educational experience delivered by world-renowned academics and distinguished industry practitioners in the field.
Both programs (MSc in Shipping Management and MBA in Shipping) offer specialized shipping courses. Apart from specialized shipping courses and workshops, the MBA in Shipping program invests heavily in leadership and strategic management competencies, which are particularly relevant both as personal advantages and as essential resources for companies in this sector.

MSc in Shipping Management:
To be considered for admission, candidates must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree; - Provide evidence of excellent command of the English language;
- Need to be currently employed or self-employed (valid for the part time mode only) GMAT tests are optional unless the Academic Committee requires the applicant to take them: in any case, scores of 550 or more (GRE >155) can strengthen your application and help you secure a scholarship.
MBA in Shipping:
To be considered for admission, candidates must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree; - Provide evidence of excellent command of the English language;
- Have a minimum of three years substantial work experience – For marine officers particularly they need to be Master or Chief Engineer serving both at sea & onshore.
- GMAT tests are optional unless the Academic Committee requires the applicant to take them: in any case, scores of 550 or more (GRE >155) can strengthen your application and help you secure
Candidates apply online
Candidates must submit:
- The completed application form, including one recent photograph in jpeg format;
- Two letters of recommendation in Greek or in English language.
- Official Academic Transcripts as well as Certified copies of degrees from each undergraduate, graduate or professional degree earned;
- Proof of competence in the English language (unless schooled in English), e.g. Proficiency or TOEFL or IELTS. An English official language exam will be requested for VISA and permit application later on.
- Three Essays, as indicated in the Application form;
After the application is received, Alba contacts the applicants to arrange the payment of the application fee and to arrange the video call for the interview.
Next step is the evaluation of the application file by the academic committee and if accepted an acceptance letter with the final scholarship amount is sent to the applicant (2-3 weeks). Then the applicant needs to enrol (pay the registration fee/1st instalment which is 40% of the tuition
fees), in order to initiate the VISA application procedure with the school international office.

It is best the VISA is applied using help from the university. You could connect with S&B to take guidance on the timelines, process, fees, stakeholders involved, questions etc.
According to the Greek Immigration Labor law, international students with Student VISA D.4.1 are not allowed to work in Greece during their studies and are not eligible for Post Work Visa. However, Greek Shipping companies recruit international graduates as expatriates from different branches abroad or they are willing to sponsor the students’ work visa after they return back home. Greek Shipping network is global and alumni have a lot of opportunities for international jobs.
