Their duties and responsibilities involve supervision, managing the engineering crew, maintaining & repairing of the ship`s machinery and equipment to ensure safety. To be considered for EOOW UK COC, candidates must fulfill multiple Eligibility criteria including all the courses and certifications. To obtain a UK Certificate of Competency (COC) as a Chief Engineer, you must meet specific eligibility criteria. This includes completing 36 months of sea-going service as EOOW, applying for LIA (Letter of Initial Assessment) and successfully completing various short courses. Fulfilling these requirements will make you eligible to apply for the Class 1 UK Certificate of Competency (COC). Once you have submitted your COC application, you will undergo 3 months of on-campus training in the UK. During this training period, there will be an examination that, upon passing, will grant you the COC for Sailing as a Chief Officer
Eligibility from Class IV to Class 1:
1. Apply for LIA (Letter of Initial Assessment)
2. Must have completed 36 months of sea service as an EOOW.
a. A minimum of 18 months of this seagoing service must have been on vessels of at least
3000 kW, in-charge of the watch* or with designated UMS duties and the remainder on
vessels of at least 750 kW;
OR
3. 12 months’ seagoing service as a Second Engineer III/2,
4. A valid ENG1 (medical fitness certificate) or accepted equivalent.
5. Qualification to UKVI English Language Test
Must complete a Chief Engineer course at an MCA-approved nautical college. This will lead onto the MCA academic examinations.
To qualify for the Chief Engineer, III/2, CoC, you must obtain a pass mark of at least 50% in all MCA Chief Engineer academic examinations at this level.
Eligibility from Class 2 to Class 1:( Chief Engineer (Unlimited) III/2 Procedures)
If you didn’t clear the MEO Class I license with Class II due to less sea-time, you can now clear these exams by just giving your oral examination additionally
1. Apply for LIA (College Acceptance letter);
2. Letter from NARIC – Comparability letter (if Class 4 done from India, etc) (Optional)
3. Apply for Notice of Eligibility (NOE) – (MCA Acceptance Letter);
4. Sea Service requirement – (12 months seagoing service as a Second Engineer III/2 on vessels of at least 750 KW)
5. Testimonial of Sea service.
6. Medical Certificate – ENG1.
Note: If you already hold a Class 2 CoC from India, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, etc., please apply for a Notice of Eligibility (NoE) with the MCA. The MCA will mention in the NoE the subjects for which you need to do the course, the written exams that you need to clear along with the MCA oral exams to be issued with a Class 1 CoC
EOOW valid courses and certifications: (MCA UK approved)
Besides the above requirements, candidates must have successfully completed the following courses and obtained their following certificates before the Certificate of competency (COC) can be issued by the MCA. The following MCA, UK approved STCW advanced courses are now being done in Mumbai (online)

1. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
2. Proficiency in survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSC & RB)
3. Advanced Fire fighting
4. Medical First Aid
5. High Voltage (Management) – Mandatory
6. Helm (Management) – Mandatory
7. Tanker Endorsement Certificates and Courses Applicable
Details of the course
Course Title: Chief Engineer, Unlimited Class I
Duration: 3 months (Offline in UK)
Fees: 3300 GBP (It is approx. and may vary)
Start Date: The program runs on a tri-annual basis, with batches starting in March, August & December.
Mode of Conduct: 3 months offline in UK campus
Conclusion:
If all the afore-mentioned criteria`s are met, the candidate will qualify for the UK COC Class 1 or Chief Engineer Unlimited license
