1.Deck Department:
The personnel in deck department deal with general operations on ship. They are responsible for Navigation, ship handling, cargo operations and crew management. The hierarchy in the deck department is as follow:

2.Engine Department
The personnel in engine department assumes responsibility for the upkeep of all machinery, engines, generators and other cargo related machinery to ensure the voyage's seamless operation. They oversee the well-being of engines and other equipment, promptly rectifying any issues that arise to maintain their optimal functionality.

3.Catering Department
The catering department in the merchant navy is responsible for providing sustenance, comfort, and nutrition to the crew and passengers on board. It manages food preparation, storage, and service, ensuring high-quality meals are available throughout the voyage. The highest-ranking officer on a merchant vessel, known as the Captain or Master, holds overall command of the ship. The captain bears the responsibility to oversee the ship's safe and efficient operation, covering aspects such as seaworthiness, safety and security, cargo handling, navigation, crew supervision, compliance with legal requirements, as well as the safety and welfare of all passengers and cargo onboard.
The Chief Officer, or Chief Mate, is the senior officer right below the Captain/Master on a Merchant vessel. They are responsible for directing the deck department. The Chief Mate is accountable for various tasks but are not restricted to Navigational duties, Cargo operations, Implementing safety and security protocols and Emergency response
3.Second Officer/Mate
The Second Officer plays a key role in navigation and safety. He/She assists in plotting courses, maintain a lookout, and communicate with other vessels. His/Her responsibilities encompass safety drills, maintaining records, and supervising junior crew members. They contribute to smooth cargo operations and are vital for ensuring the ship's overall safe and efficient journey.
4.Third Officer/Mate
Third officers assist with equipment maintenance, conduct safety drills, and oversee life-saving equipment. Their responsibilities also include managing charts, supervising deckhands, and assisting higher-ranking officers during navigation and maneuvering.
5.Deck Cadet
A deck cadet in the merchant navy's deck department is an aspiring officer undergoing training. They assist senior officers in navigation, maintenance, and safety tasks.
The Chief Engineer, a pivotal figure in the engine department of the merchant navy, holds the reins of the ship's mechanical heart. 4.Third Engineer

5.Fourth Engineer
Fourth engineer ensure the routine maintenance and assists senior engineers, they ensure the smooth operation of generators and systems. Their tasks include monitoring equipment, conducting repairs, and contributing to the overall efficiency and functionality of the ship's engine room.
6.TME (Trainee Marine Engineer)
The Trainee Marine Engineer (TME) in the engine department is an aspiring professional gaining hands-on experience. Under the guidance of senior engineers, they assist in maintaining machinery, performing routine checks, and troubleshooting.
1.Chief Cooks
The Chief Cook is the head of the onboard culinary team. Responsible for menu planning, food preparation, and maintaining hygiene standards, they ensure that crew members and passengers are well-nourished during voyages. Beyond cooking skills, the Chief Cook oversees provisioning, budgeting, and supervising the kitchen staff, contributing significantly to the overall comfort and satisfaction of those on board
2.Trainee Cooks
From mastering kitchen safety to adapting recipes for shipboard constraints, trainee cooks play a vital role in ensuring the crew's nutritional needs are met during voyages, while also developing skills that contribute to the efficient functioning of the catering department. Under the guidance of experienced chefs, they gain hands-on experience in meal planning, cooking techniques, and galley operations.
3.Steward
Stewards contribute to a comfortable and efficient ship environment, playing a vital part in enhancing the overall experience for those on board. Responsible for housekeeping and hospitality services, they maintain cleanliness, organize cabins, and assist in meal service.
Please note depending on various types of ships there could be additional designations as well. for e.g – Gas Engineer, Radio Officer, Ships Clerk, Supernumerary etc.
