The classification of paintings has a long and complicated history, dating back to the early days of art history. In the beginning, paintings were categorized as either religious or secular. As time went on, however, art historians began to develop more specific classifications for paintings, including genre, style, and movement. One of the earliest systems for classifying paintings was developed by the French art historian Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
