Many of our mariner friends might have thought of pursuing COC courses from UK but due to lack of 1st hand information or more recently pandemic related issues we might not have been able to pursue. Also, we may not be aware of the advantages of completing our COC’s from Warsash and the distinct advantage that the university now offers a pathway to a B.SC degree seamlessly fused with the COC courses
Key points covered in the webinar will be:
- Overview of the university, city and location
- Different deck-side COC courses on offer starting from a 2nd mate to Master COC
- The eligibility, fees, duration and assessment
- The unique B.Sc. degree on offer by taking the 2nd COC route
- The structure of the course including Curriculum, Pedagogy, exams and attendance
- Advantages of completing your COC from UK and specifically from Warsash
Work Visa provisions - How the B.Sc course could add value to the life of a participant including the company connect, placements and typical job roles
This webinar is relevant for persons with sailing experience with following background:
- Experience as deck crew and want to get a COC for officer
- Holding Panama, Belize, Honduras or equivalent COC’s
- Deck cadets with sailing experience and aspiring for a 2nd Mate COC.
- Sailing experience as navigating officer aspiring for a C/Off or master’s COC.
The webinar will be presented by Kunal Anand and Dr. (Capt.) Adesh Joshi.
Dr. (Capt.) Adesh Joshi is Senior Manager and Professional courses at Warsash Maritime School, Solent University. He has an extensive sea and shore-based experience in the maritime Industry and a matching experience in Higher Education. He is currently leading two international research projects on Capacity Building in the field of Maritime Education, and Developing Maritime Education internationally.
Kunal Anand is head of subject group for Maritime Business & Operations. He is an ex-merchant navy officer. Having done his initial seafaring qualifications from Singapore Maritime Academy, he then completed his senior qualifications from Warsash. He sailed mostly on crude and product tankers of various sizes around the world. Later on, in his career he completed MSc in International Maritime Studies (Shipping, Ports & environment) from Solent University.
Kunal is Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Associate Fellow of Royal Institute of Navigation and a Member of the Nautical Institute. He is currently the Chair of IASST, UK Chapter, member of the Professional development committee of Nautical Institute and Member of the Merchant Navy Training Board, Technical committee
The webinar would consist of the following:
- A 30–35-minute presentation by Nickie where she would discuss the above topics.
- 20-25 minutes of Q&A wherein the presenters would take questions

Mr. Kunal Anand
Head of Maritime Professional Courses - Solent University,Kunal Anand is head of subject group for Maritime Business & Operations. He is an ex-merchant navy officer. Having done his initial seafaring qualifications from Singapore Maritime Academy, he then completed his senior qualifications from Warsash. He sailed mostly on crude and product tankers of various sizes around the world.
