In continuation of our previous panel discussion on MBA for mariners, we are now doing one on “Maritime focused degree for mariners”.
Many of us would like to enhance our skills and might have thought about generic MBA or courses within Shipping. Till a couple of years back, the knowledge and availability of maritime focused courses was not there. Very few persons were joining maritime focused courses and most of them had to do their own research and would take up a course without much guidance/mentoring.

In this panel discussion, we plan to connect with alumni who have completed maritime focused courses from different parts of the world. We would like to hear from them about:

a) Why did they want to do a maritime focused course?
b) How did they choose the course?
c) Which mode of learning would they prefer? (Full time/distance)
d) Key learnings from the course
e) How did the course help them?
f) Their recommendation for others

This panel discussion will be moderated by Capt. Gaurav Rana from Sea and Beyond.

We would have the following persons on our panel:

a) Capt. Abhishek Nair: He has been out at sea for 16 years with the last 3 years in command of VLCC's. In 2015, he decided to pursue further education for which he chose the MEL program at Erasmus University Rotterdam and has made The Netherlands his home since. After graduating, he worked at Stolt Tankers in their chartering/trading team managing key account contracts and then eventually moving on to managing port and berth rotations for their deep-sea fleet in Northwest Europe.

b) Capt. Amarinder Brar: He is a master mariner with over 25 years of industry experience. This includes 17 years at sea with 6 years of command time, followed by Master of Maritime Law (Merit) from the University of Southampton. He also holds a PG diploma in Marine Insurance from World Maritime University, Malmo. He has worked as Nautical Lecturer in India for all grades of deck competency, a marine surveyor for MCA in UK which included PSC duties, as a Consultant for LOC London serving the maritime legal and insurance sectors. He now works as Marine manager with MFB Solicitors, London where he is involved in both dry and wet shipping disputes.

c) Capt. Abhay Kumar: Capt. Abhay Kumar is a master mariner with 15 years of shore experience including in the field of Post fixture operations, Strategic planning, Ship Sale & Purchase & Ship performance Management. He joined merchant navy in 1995 with shipping corporation of India. He has sailed for 12 years. Later, he completed M.Sc. Shipping, Trade & Finance in the year 2007-2008 from Cass Business School, London(now called Bayes)  Capt. Abhay joined Great Eastern after the course and is currently working for Precious shipping.
