Commercial shipping is not limited to the business of transporting goods and commodities, for trade and commerce; it is a value-chain activity extending beyond “Pre-fixture, Operations and Post-fixture”, and it has the opportunity to provide gainful employment to thousands of seafarers those who are seeking “ship-to-shore transition” or upskilling.

Commercial Shipping has vast career opportunities (and seafarers seek these opportunities) yet it is a surprising fact that Commercial shipping companies are unable to find manpower with sufficient skills and experience. To understand in detail this “manpower scarcity” and “Job-Skill” mismatch situation in Commercial Shipping, ‘Sea and Beyond’ conducted a survey (https://forms.gle/g6ydiHPFEfjCeFwC8) in mid-July 2024, and the Key Insights of the survey are:

  1. For 89% survey participants commercial shipping is professionally aspirational
  2. 52% are exploring/searching an employment opportunity (last 3 months at least) in Commercial Shipping
  3. 67% would like to attend a rigorous course in Commercial shipping if this course provides Quality Education and assistance in placement

Considering the outcome of this survey, Sea and Beyond has organized a panel discussion. This Panel has highly experienced and esteemed professionals/faculty-members of Commercial shipping, and the idea of this panel is to help seafarers take “well-informed career decision” and the panel-members will share how the upcoming “A certificate course on Commercial Shipping by Sea and Beyond and GMU” will bridge the Job-skill gap in commercial shipping.

Agenda of the Panel Discussion:

  1. Overview of the Commercial Shipping
  2. Evolution of commercial shipping in terms of geography where the decision makers and key resources are sitting
  3. Commercial shipping activities in India and the support we are providing globally
  4. Current Challenges Commercial shipping company facing (mainly manpower deficit with matching skills)
  5. Challenges job-seekers (both seafarers and shore professionals) facing
  6. Way forward for the job-seekers and the commercial shipping industry, and career advice to persons seeking transition ashore

Mr. Krishnan Subramaniam, International Vice Chairman of ICS and advisor at Transworld Group

Mr. Sandeep Misra, Ex GM commercial with SCI
